FAQ: AI for category management, assortment and pricing
Platform
Zenline AI is the AI platform for every product decision. It brings your company’s data, a digital model of the market and an autonomous AI team together in one place, for retailers, brands and manufacturers. The Company Brain holds everything your company knows and the Market Brain everything the market shows. The agents turn both into concrete recommendations for assortment, pricing and shopper insights, in line with your strategy, so you can give shoppers what they want, at the best possible margin.
Analytics tools provide data and dashboards that often take category teams weeks to analyze. Zenline’s AI agents deliver the insights and recommendations directly, each with its reasoning, sources and expected effect. The agents review every product the way your best category manager would, across the whole assortment and down to the long tail. They follow the strategy and specifics of each company, such as its margin logic, its definition of substitutes and the metrics that matter in every category. Zenline always works with the latest AI models from leading providers.
Zenline AI’s agents work like your best category manager, across the whole assortment instead of only the most profitable 5 to 10 percent. The agents can take on any workflow or task, for example listing products, setting prices, developing new products or choosing sales channels. They handle research and analysis that would otherwise take weeks and keep the whole company and market in view. Your team keeps the final say: category managers review the recommendations, approve or adjust them, and working with the agents gives them the capacity of a team twice the size. The result: shoppers find the products they are looking for, at the right price.
Zenline AI increases margin by making the right commercial decisions in every category: the right products in the assortment, the right price for every product and fewer products that end in markdown. The agents work across the whole assortment, down to the long tail. That is often where millions in margin remain that category teams rarely have time for in their day-to-day work. This way, shoppers get exactly the products they will ask for next.
Zenline AI works for retailers, brands and manufacturers in every vertical: food & beverage, beauty, fashion & sports, electronics, home & DIY, pet and more. The AI agents first learn the commercial processes and then the logic of your categories, so they reliably account for their specifics.
Onboarding takes one week, and your team gets its first recommendations during the pilot. The pilot runs on public data only, so you can start without any internal data integration or IT involvement. Reach out to our team to learn how Zenline works with external data alone.
Yes. You can start Zenline AI with a single category and then expand category by category. Just send us a category through the form, and we will get back to you with first results.
The Company Brain is a digital model of your entire product assortment, including your company context. Zenline first designs it from publicly available information, such as the product data on your website, so no internal data is needed to start. Step by step, sales, margin, master and inventory data, your business logic and strategy, and the knowledge of your category teams are added, and the model grows with every dataset. The Market Brain maps the market: competitors, Google Shopping, social media, web research and shopper needs. It also holds the insights the Shopper Insights Agent derives from raw data, such as brands, products, consumer sentiment, purchase power, inflation and cross-market relevance.
Zenline AI turns raw data from many sources into market insights. It continuously monitors marketplaces and competitor websites, including their assortments, prices, price history, promotions, availability, ratings, reviews, bestseller tags and rankings. It also reads Google Search, Google Trends and Google Shopping, retailer websites, web research, economic data, press and offline events, as well as social platforms such as TikTok, Pinterest, Instagram and YouTube. Zenline’s Consumer Panel adds the human perspective. From all of this, the Shopper Insights Agent derives market insights on brands, products, price sensitivity, channel mix, regional differences, competitor moves and cross-market relevance. It adds insights on shoppers and consumption: needs, decision trees, consumer sentiment, trends and fads, seasonality, purchase power and inflation. The agent files all insights in the Market Brain.
Zenline AI is ISO 27001 certified, all databases are in Europe, and customer data is not used to train models. Zenline AI runs every customer in a completely separate environment. Data, agents and all inputs stay with that customer; the agents of different customers share no learnings and do not interact. Internal processes also define which Zenline employees can see which customer data.
Assortment Agent
With agentic assortment optimization, AI agents take on the analysis that category teams would otherwise do by hand. The Zenline Assortment Agent checks your assortment against the market and your strategy. It finds gaps worth filling, validated with market signals and ranked by expected commercial impact, and recommends private label where it pays off, with suggestions on suppliers, ingredients and design on request. It also finds overlaps and products that can be delisted, and shows where demand would go if a product is removed: to a substitute, out of the category or to a competitor. The result is a leaner assortment with more products selling at full price, built around what your shoppers ask for.
The Zenline Assortment Agent covers both branded and private-label products and also finds new private-label opportunities. Your team can ask the agent about suitable suppliers, ingredients and design for a new private-label product, too.
The Zenline Assortment Agent compares your assortment with current shopper demand and with the Zenline Market Brain, a digital model of all products in your market and category. It shows the brands and products your shoppers are looking for that are missing from your assortment, without your team spending weeks or months on research. Where a private label can fill a gap, the agent can also suggest suppliers, ingredients and design on request.
AI assortment optimization improves margin by making sure every product in the assortment earns its place, with a mix of brands and private label that matches shopper demand. The Zenline Assortment Agent finds overlaps, meaning products that split demand and end in markdown. It shows which of them can be delisted without losing demand and where private label or new products can add margin. Your assortment gets leaner, less capital is tied up in stock and more products sell at full price.
Zenline AI supports pre-season assortment planning: you can run the Assortment Agent on the proposed buy, so overlaps are fixed before purchase orders are placed.
The Zenline Assortment Agent is category-agnostic and works across food & beverage, beauty, fashion & sports, electronics, home & DIY and all other categories. It has learned the commercial workflows of category teams and learns the logic of each category on top, such as which attributes, seasonal cycles and metrics matter there. The market and trend data for each category also comes from the sources that matter to its shoppers.
You stay in control: your category team makes the final assortment decision. The Zenline Assortment Agent does the work that usually takes weeks or months, from finding gaps and overlaps to preparing and ranking every listing and delisting option. Your team can focus on strategy and execution and keeps the final say on what changes in the assortment.
Pricing Agent
AI price optimization compares your prices with competitor prices, product features and promotions and suggests the price that best balances margin and competitiveness for each product. At Zenline AI, this comparison runs on the Zenline Market Brain, which holds all products from marketplaces and competitors in your market with their current prices and their price history. The Pricing Agent prepares a price for every product with its reasoning and sources, based on your company’s guardrails and strategy, and your team keeps the final say on what goes live.
The Zenline Pricing Agent improves margin by looking at every price in its full market context. It compares offers like for like, including identical, equivalent and substitute products at other retailers, and finds products that are priced too low for their value and products that are priced too aggressively. It suggests the right price for every variant, including the long tail. Every price respects your margin guardrails and your price positioning, so you gain margin and stay competitive.
All price data comes from the Zenline Market Brain, a digital model of all products in your market and category. It holds the current, regular and promotional prices of the retailers and marketplaces you choose, together with their full price history. The Pricing Agent matches these products to yours, so every comparison shows where your price stands today and how competitor prices have developed over time.
The Zenline Pricing Agent works for private label as well. The Zenline Market Brain holds all products in your market, including the branded or private-label products your private label competes with. The Pricing Agent matches each of your private-label products to the most similar branded products, based on similarities in attributes, images and descriptions, so you can set the right price gap between your own label and the brands.
The Pricing Agent captures and marks promotions, so a short-term discount at a competitor is visible as such in every comparison.
You stay in control. The agents do the work, from comparing prices to preparing every price change, and your team keeps the final say on what goes live. We are aware that every category has specifics that can be missing from a strategy briefing. When your team adds that context, the agents learn from it and their recommendations improve. Approved prices can be handed over to your pricing system, and the agents learn from every price your team approves or adjusts.
Shopper Insights Agent
Web data providers deliver raw data, such as prices, rankings or search volumes, and your team needs weeks to draw conclusions about the market and shoppers from it. The Zenline Shopper Insights Agent reads raw data from many sources and turns it into market insights with one click: shopper needs, consumer sentiment, purchase power, inflation and more. Alongside how the market has developed in the past, it picks up early signals in search, social media and marketplaces and predicts which trends shoppers will want next. Zenline’s agents then recommend product decisions based on these insights, tailored to your company and category.
Yes. The Zenline Shopper Insights Agent chooses its sources per category. Each category gets the sources that matter to its shoppers.
The Zenline Shopper Insights Agent reads raw data from many sources and chooses them per category. They include Google Trends, Google Search, Google Shopping, YouTube, TikTok, Pinterest, Instagram, reviews and comments, marketplaces, retailer websites, competitor assortments, price history, web research, newspaper and economic data. Our Consumer Panel adds the view of real shoppers from all age groups. The agent turns this raw data into insights and files them in the Market Brain, so your team gets continuous market research without waiting for the next study.
The Market Brain is the digital model of the market in Zenline AI, across retailers, marketplaces and countries, with every brand, product, price history, attribute and social signal connected. The Shopper Insights Agent files its insights there: brands, products, price history, needs, the decision tree, consumer sentiment, purchase power, inflation, trends and fads, seasonality, price sensitivity, channel mix, regional differences and cross-market relevance. Zenline’s agents can query the Market Brain in seconds to compare it with your company and derive recommendations for assortment and pricing.
Panel data shows how a selected group of shoppers behaves. The Zenline Shopper Insights Agent can use panel data as one source and combines it with search, social, marketplace and price data, plus the Zenline Consumer Panel. The result is a continuously updated set of insights for every category, filed in the Market Brain.
The Zenline Consumer Panel is our own market research panel: people from all age groups who regularly share what shows up in their feeds through voluntary data donation. The Shopper Insights Agent combines their view with search, social and competitor data at scale. That gives your team ongoing market research on every category.
The Zenline Shopper Insights Agent follows every signal over time across search, social and marketplaces. A trend keeps growing across several channels and markets, a viral spike peaks once and fades. How long the agent watches a signal and when it counts as a trend is adapted to each company, its vertical and its seasonal and assortment cycles. The agent classifies each signal accordingly, so your team invests in trends and skips spikes. Your assortment then follows what shoppers want next. Cross-market relevance shows whether a signal from one country is gaining ground in yours. One fashion brand had a trending product in its assortment about six months earlier than usual and generated revenue in the tens of millions with it.
The Zenline Shopper Insights Agent reads its sources continuously in the background and adds new signals to the Market Brain as they appear. Your team can look at the current picture of a category at any time. You can set individually how often your team is notified about new insights and trends.
No, the Zenline Shopper Insights Agent starts with public data and delivers first insights from it. Your own data, for example as weekly uploads, lets the agent match the insights to your assortment and strategy. Zenline AI is up and running within one week.
Company Brain
The Company Brain is a digital model of your entire product assortment, including your company context. It connects your data, so knowledge that is usually spread across departments, systems, spreadsheets and people’s heads comes together in one place. Zenline’s AI agents work from this model, so every product recommendation reflects how your team works.
The Company Brain can start with the product data on your own website, so Zenline can get going without any effort on your side. Once you add your data, it becomes a digital model of your assortment and strategy (possible data: sales, margin, PIM, inventory, loyalty program, website traffic, promotion and relationship data, plus business logic and category strategy).
You can start the Company Brain without first collecting all your data in one central system. It is built from the data you can share today, even from simple exports, and grows as more data arrives. No IT integration is needed.
Your own AI agents can use the Company Brain as well and work from the same data as the Zenline AI agents. You will just need to teach them how to use the Company Brain best.
Product Matching
Substitutes, variants, complements and products bought together, including matches between national brands and private label. If you need more, just tell the agent.
Every link has a confidence score. High-confidence matches publish automatically, the rest go to your team for a one-click review.
Product matching at Zenline AI is an ongoing process. The relationship map is maintained continuously and updates when your assortment or the market changes, so new products are suggested as substitutes right away.
Zenline AI finds substitutes with the help of two models. The Company Brain is a digital model of your entire product assortment, including your company context, built from your master data, purchase behavior and business logic. The Market Brain holds all products in your market with their images, names, prices, descriptions and attributes. The agents compare both and match the products that are equivalent in your category, for example by texture, skin type and pack size in beauty. Every match has a confidence score and can be reviewed with one click. Category managers see at a glance which products from other brands or their own brand are substitutes, and where a private label could pay off. Brands use the same matching to see which products in the market compete with their own.
Product Data Cleaning
Zenline AI uses AI agents to harmonize and clean all assortment and price data. This is the foundation that lets the AI agents work cleanly across the assortment. To do this, the agents check your product data with text and image models and harmonize terms, attributes, units, and brand and variant names, so the same attribute is always described the same way. Zenline fills missing attributes from product sheets and manufacturer websites, and duplicates and conflicting entries are resolved. This data cleaning is a standard process for every customer.
Everything you can imagine: color, size, capacity, compatibility, pack size, brand and variant names, plus the category-specific attributes your filters rely on. The agent also checks titles and attributes against product images.
Zenline AI works with every PIM system. Agents and team adapt to your setup.
Yes. If your data must stay in-house, Zenline runs on-premise in your own data center or private cloud. Otherwise every customer gets a completely separate environment, hosted in Europe. Either way, your data is not used to train models.
Security
No. Zenline AI does not use customer data to train models. Every customer runs in a completely separate environment, so data, agents and all inputs stay with that customer. The agents of different customers share no learnings and do not interact with each other. Internal processes also define which Zenline employees can see which customer data.
